What is a Nexus Statement?

The medical opinion linking your condition to service.

A nexus statement is a written opinion from your treating doctor or specialist that your condition was caused or contributed to by your military service. It is the single most important piece of evidence for an Initial Liability claim.

The nexus statement should include the doctor's clinical opinion on whether there is a connection between your condition and your service activities, exposures, or events. The doctor does not need to be certain — they need to state that in their clinical opinion, the connection exists.

To get a nexus statement, provide your treating doctor with your service history (including dates, unit, role, and relevant activities) and ask them to write a statement linking your condition to your service.

A strong nexus statement references specific service activities and explains the clinical basis for the connection. DVA generally considers a clear nexus statement from a qualified clinician as important evidence.
