Complete Claims (since 31 March 2025)

What DVA requires for a claim to progress.

From 31 March 2025, DVA checks that claims are complete at intake. If a claim is incomplete, it is placed on hold — but the date of lodgement is still registered.

A complete claim requires three mandatory items: a fully completed claim form, correct proof of identity, and a medical diagnosis from a qualified medical practitioner.

Supporting evidence such as a nexus statement, service records, and specialist reports are highly recommended and will strengthen your claim, but DVA does not require them at lodgement. If DVA needs additional information during assessment, a delegate will contact you.

You can still lodge a claim that is missing recommended evidence. However, lodging without the three mandatory items will result in a hold at the intake stage. DVA will advise what is missing and your claim will progress once you provide it.

Use the Evidence Builder in this navigator to check you have the mandatory items and as much supporting evidence as possible before lodging.
