Frequently Asked Questions

About This Tool

Is this tool free?

Yes. All guidance, eligibility checks, the claims wizard, evidence checklists, form guides, and knowledge articles are completely free. Some advanced features (document upload and AI analysis) use a credit system to cover processing costs.

Does this tool store my personal information?

No. The eligibility checker, wizard, and all guidance pages work entirely in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server or saved anywhere. If you create an account in the future, your data will be stored securely in Australia only.

Can this tool lodge a claim for me?

No. This tool helps you understand and prepare your claim. You lodge it yourself through MyService, by phone, in person, or by post.

Is this legal advice or medical advice?

No. This is a guide only. Always verify with DVA directly or with a qualified advocate before lodging a claim.

Is my data safe?

Yes. All guidance features work entirely in your browser. No personal data is sent to any server. If account features are added, all data will be stored securely within Australia, encrypted at rest.

DVA Claims Process

How long does a DVA claim take?

Timeframes vary. Non-Liability Health Care can be processed in weeks. Initial Liability claims typically take several months. DVA processing times fluctuate — please verify current averages directly with DVA. From 31 March 2025, claims must be complete when lodged. Check status through MyService.

Do I need an advocate?

Not required, but many veterans find it helpful. Accredited advocates from ex-service organisations (RSL, Legacy) provide free assistance. Find them at dva.gov.au/get-support/veteran-support-organisations.

What if my situation is not covered here?

Health & Support

What is Non-Liability Health Care (NLHC)?

Treatment for mental health conditions and cancer without proving a link to service. Not a compensation payment. Often the fastest way to get mental health support through DVA.

What is PAMT?

Provisional Access to Medical Treatment. Access treatment for the 20 most commonly accepted conditions while your claim is being assessed. Ask DVA when lodging.

What is the Veteran Payment?

Financial support if you have a mental health claim being assessed and cannot work more than 8 hours per week. Ask DVA about eligibility when you lodge.

Legislation

What changed with the VETS Act?

From 1 July 2026, all new compensation claims go under the improved MRCA. The VEA and DRCA close to new compensation claims. Existing payments continue unaffected. A new single review pathway applies: VRB then ART.

This is a guide only. A free guide for veterans. Not legal, medical, or financial advice. Always verify with DVA directly or with a qualified advocate before lodging a claim.
