Superannuation and DVA Compensation

How Commonwealth Superannuation interacts with DVA payments.

If you were medically discharged from the ADF, your DVA compensation may interact with Commonwealth Superannuation Corporation (CSC) invalidity pensions. Understanding this interaction is important because it can affect the net financial outcome of your DVA claims.

DVA compensation payments, particularly the Special Rate Disability Pension (SRDP) under MRCA, may be offset against CSC invalidity pension payments. This means the total amount you receive from both sources combined may not simply be the sum of both payments.

The offsetting rules are complex and depend on your individual circumstances, including which Act your compensation falls under, the type of superannuation scheme you belonged to (such as MSBS, DFRDB, or ADF Cover), the amount of your CSC invalidity pension, and any previous DRCA lump sum payments you have received.

Because of this complexity, DVA generally considers independent financial advice an important step before making decisions about SRDP or other compensation options that interact with superannuation. Veterans with 50 or more impairment points are eligible for DVA-funded financial advice reimbursement.

Consider speaking with your GP about whether a referral to a financial adviser experienced in DVA and military superannuation matters would be helpful for your situation.
